Institutional Development & Capacity Building

Support for understanding capacity needs and planning organizational development.

Who this is for

Organizations that want to understand a capacity gap and plan how to address it. The gap might be in a process, a skill the team needs, or the way decisions and records are kept.

What this can include

  • Capacity needs assessments
  • Organizational development support
  • Capacity-building plans and process reviews

How an assignment starts

A capacity assessment starts from the work the organization is trying to do, not from a generic checklist. We agree which functions are in scope, who will be asked, and what kind of plan the assignment will produce.

Questions

What does a capacity assessment produce?

A description of the capacity the organization needs for a defined piece of work, the gap that was observed, and a plan for what to develop. It is not a ranking of staff and it is not a claim that capacity has already improved.

Do you deliver training?

Training or a workshop is included only when the scope says so. Many assignments stop at the assessment and the development plan, which the organization can carry out itself.

How is this different from strategic planning?

Strategic planning asks where the organization is heading. Institutional development asks whether the people, processes, and records can carry a piece of work that is already identified.
